I have been metal detecting Camp Cable for over a year and have found many
different things from coins, dog tags, medals, to live ordnances. What I
don't understand is how Lend Lease can put housing on the land when live
grenades are still being found out there. I'm very surprised the area hasn't
been screened for these live ordnances. Some of us that detect the area
would like the Yarrabilba estate stopped due to this. What they're doing is
dis-respecting the men and women who served there and helped save this
country of ours.

Joseph F. Oyer, US Army Stationed here 1942?
According to my research, my grandfather (American infantry soldier attached
to the 32nd Division, US Army) was stationed here prior to being deployed to
New Guinea, then later, The Philippines. His name was Joseph Oyer, from
Oklahoma, USA. He told me precious little about his time fighting in the
Pacific Theater, and I am anxious to learn what I can. It's a long shot for
sure, but if anyone reading this has any information please let me know at
christopher.newsom@gmail.com.
Cheers,

scholarly neglect
Like many
Queensland historical sites, doesn't seem to be any effort to publish a
comprehensive site report on Camp Cable. Cursory reports prepared to rubber
stamp housing developments dishonour our forebears and rob future
generations of their heritage. Challenging site conditions of dense
vegetation don't justify scholarly neglect. |
